Our Research Findings

As the backbone for the project Food Chains for Competitive Advantage we compiled a research study into the levels of innovation in the food and drink industry in Ireland today: Innovation in the Food and Drink Industry, A Report Focusing on Factors Effecting and Barriers to Innovation.

The IEA Food and Drink Division conducted the initial research by means of a telephone survey. We surveyed 100 food and drink companies from across Ireland of all sizes and sectors. In this survey we touched on the NPD resources and Innovation that was going on in food and drink companies in Ireland. This piece of research showed us the barriers to innovation in food and drink companies in Ireland.

From this list of 100 companies we then selected 20 companies within the Interreg region, who would give us a more in depth knowledge and access into the levels of NPD that was happening in their business and the innovation levels being utilised. Our researcher Gwen Dempsey conducted these one to one discussions either face to face or over the telephone to allow for the most effective means of communication to give us the most realistic and honest answers. These in depth interviews showed us the barriers to innovation in food and drink companies within the Interreg region.

The research piece also looks into the barriers to innovation as a whole, and the barriers to innovation in the food industry worldwide by means of a bench research study and concludes with the two above pieces which are of most importance and interest to us: the barriers to innovation in the food industry in Ireland and the barriers to innovation in teh food industry in the Interreg region in Ireland.
